January 17, 2022 - from Jane Salemson -
Sad news of a well-known North Carolina cellist, Lynne Latham, who passed away on January 17, 2022.
I knew Lynne years ago when playing with her in the cello section of the Greensboro Symphony. Lynn was an excellent cellist and musician. In the 1990's, Lynn started her music arrangement company, Latham Music Enterprises. A boon for string quartet players who needed good arrangements of music suitable for weddings and receptions. String Quartets all over the country (perhaps all over the world) enjoy playing her classical arrangements of Bach, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Handel, Wagner, Liszt, that goes on and on. A special arrangement she edited was "Song without Words" a group by Mendelssohn, Schubert, Debussy, No wonder musicians enjoyed playing her arrangements. Lynn was fastidious in her printing, easy to read. www.latham-music.com
Musicians will miss her as her personality, cellist and as an arranger and editor. RIP Lynne.

April 11, 2021, Sunday at 4pm. J. Samuel Hammond (August 22, 1947 - February 25, 2021)
Duke Chapel Online Spring Concert. The final hymn of the concert will be performed in memory of the late University Carillonneur, Sam Hammond. A beautiful performance by all the participants.

A sad passing of a kind and gentle person. He will be sorely missed by so many.
Duke Music mourns the passing of J. Samuel Hammond, university carillonneur. While many at Duke remember Mr. Hammond as the man who played the carillon in the Chapel tower for over 50 years, he also had especially close ties to the Music Department.
A volunteer with Duke University String School since its inception in 1967, Mr. Hammond accompanied countless string students on the piano in orchestras, violin and cello choirs, and solo recitals. "He made each individual student, parent, teacher and friend at DUSS feel needed and important,” said director Erica Shirts. "Mr. Hammond was a man of kindness, faith, and an overflowing generosity of spirit. We will never be able to replace Sam at DUSS. He has made an enormous impression on this community, and we will remember him forever." MORE
