August 7, 2022 - 'Cello for sale. Full Size. Bought and played by a retired man and student of Brian Carter, Ph.D. Cellist from UNC Greensboro. The cello is heavy and comes with a strong and heavy hard case so it needs to go to a strong youth. It would be very good for a student. I bought the cello at the Chapel Hill Violin Shop. It is a Tanglewood Strings instrument made in 2005. The shop enhanced the sound with new Larsen Strings, and a Belgian Bridge. Also a carbon end piece. With strength, the cello produces very good sound. Includes a full sized Hamilton Stand. Photos are on the FOR SALE/WANTED tab under HOME.
Asking $2,500. Call 919 444 3012.

August 4, 2022 4/4 Cello for Sale
2014 Frederich Wyss VC703 $8500 (includes cello & case).
Photos on the FOR SALE/WANTED tab, Home Page
Frederich Wyss cello for sale - in excellent condition! I’ve had this cello for three years but recently decided to go with a 7/8 cello instead of a 4/4. It has been well maintained and has a beautiful sound. Extras include a new bridge and a posture peg. It has Larsen (A&D) and Spirocore (G&C) strings.
Comes with a lovely red case. I’ve had the case for 4 ½ years. It has a few scratches on the outside. Inside is excellent. Here’s other details about the case: weighs 12 lbs, has wheels, shoulder straps, pull handle which is detachable. Fits cellos up to 14.5" upper bouts and 18" lower bouts. Has 7 latches and two bow holders.
Please contact Belinda Hardin at [email protected] or 336-402-6680 for additional information. I would be happy to give you a Facetime tour also.

Revealing Sartory's secrets: A look at one of the 20th century's finest bow makers
Often called the finest bow maker of the 20th century, Eugène Sartory was a fastidious artisan whose work shows efficiency and reliability. Richard Morency examines a bow from Sartory’s middle period to reveal his working method. Held in Paris in 1889, the Exposition Universelle celebrated the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution and the inauguration of the Eiffel Tower. In December of the same year, Eugène Nicolas Sartory arrived in Paris with a few tools, an extraordinary talent, a certain audacity and a great sense of business. This young bow maker, just 18 years of age, was to become one of the most famous craftsmen of his time. Most bow makers and collectors agree that Sartory’s bows are of great beauty, the result of their unique style, choice of wood and efficiency of construction. How was he able to produce bows of such quality so consistently? What tools did he use, and how did he use them?A study of Sartory’s bows reveals a number of characteristic details. Looking at the traces left by the tools, one gains a glimpse into his working method, his gestures and movements. While it is tempting to speculate about Sartory’s way of working and the tools he used, we can be certain of little – not having seen the great bow maker at his workbench. Still, we can strive to reach this ideal of beauty in the making of modern bows, or at least draw inspiration from it. Attempting to copy the work of master bow makers of the past can be a formative experience – indeed, a number of present-day bow makers consider it essential to the development of expertise. So let us imagine Sartory in his time, and explore this great bow maker’s art with pleasure, curiosity, humility and all the respect that we owe him…The rest of this article is for Strad subscribers.

Hi there, favorite cellists and pianists! From the We Do What We Can department, here’s a setting of the Ukrainian national anthem I did a couple of weeks ago for Carrie and Gabrielius Alekna to play in recital in Vilnius, as Putin’s squadrons of murdering keystone cops were busy ravaging Ukraine. While the Ukrainians have proven to be fearsome fighters, protecting their nation and turning back this depraved, criminal invasion, it’s not over yet, and this week’s revelations in Bucha point to more horrors to come. If any of you are giving recitals in the coming weeks and were thinking of playing the Ukrainian anthem feel free to use this arrangement if you like. It’s attached here, along with a link to the video from Carrie and Gabrielius’s concert.

HOT OFF THE PRESS! 2021 Our NC Cellists' writings.
Sunday, May 16, 2021 - 2:00pm in the Auditorium of the North Carolina Museum of Art. Free admission.
Thanks to a grant from the North Carolina Humanities Council, Dr. Jonathan Kramer will present a new lecture called "Multiculturalism in the World of Chamber Music". This will make comparisons in live performances by Diali Cissokho & Kaira Ba, a South Indian chamber music ensemble featuring veena player Subha Sridharan and a traditional chamber music piano trio.
Recently the former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo stated of multiculturalism: “This is not what America is.” Actually, this is exactly what America is: a mosaic of peoples, traditions, forms of expression, and ways of being in the world, and this is our strength. The proposed lecture will examine what is meant by “chamber music,” not as a form of European-originated small, conductor-less ensembles alone, but a large spectrum of global genres that embodies the ideals of chamber music in many forms and from many places. From the flute, guitar, fiddle and pipes of the Gaelic ceilidh to West African drum circles; Indian sitar, tabla, and drone ensembles to the eclectic fusions of Yo Yo Ma's Silk Road collaborations. There are many types of “chamber” ensemble found throughout the world and throughout North Carolina. Guitar, bass, keyboard and drums is chamber music, jazz combo is chamber music, and bluegrass is chamber music. It will be filmed and edited for public dissemination on our website, the museum's website and through the NC Music Educators' Association.
Dr. Kramer is recently retired after 35 years serving as Professor of Music and Arts Studies at North Carolina State University, and 20 years as Adjunct Professor of Ethnomusicology at Duke University.
If you have cello music you no longer need and are willing to donate to students in Nigeria, Haiti and other financially stressed locations, please contact Jonathan Kramer at [email protected], 919-345-9389. Alternatively, the Montgomery shop in Raleigh may have a box for donations.

Here is a BBC Book of the Week "Lev's Violin: A story of Music, Culture and Italian Adventure" by Helena Attlee. It takes us on a journey through 5 centuries of Italian history and culture, and of course, violin-making by Amati and Stradivarius in Cremona. We follow how their instruments go through the centuries. Well worth listening to the 4 episodes (14 minutes each). read by Fenella Woolgar.

4/13/2020 - To see a list from a newsletter called Pine Cone, a list of financial relief resources for musicians impacted by Coronavirus cancellations
NC Specific Funds:
********************************************************************************************************************************************************************************
NC Specific Funds:
- NC Artist Relief Fund - a collaboration between Artspace, PineCone, United Arts Council, and VAE Raleigh
This fund has been created to support creative individuals who have been financially impacted by gig cancellations due to the outbreak of COVID-19. 100% of donated funds will go directly to artists and arts presenters in North Carolina. Musicians, visual artists, actors, DJ’s, dancers, teaching artists, filmmakers, comedians, and other creative individuals and arts presenters are experiencing widespread cancellations due to this global pandemic. Many North Carolina artists rely on markets, performances, classes, and exhibitions in order to pay the bills directly aligned with their costs of living. - Durham Artists Relief Fund (North Start Church of the Arts) - "Funds donated here go directly to artists and arts presenters in Durham who have been financially impacted by cancellations due to COVID-19, with priority given to to BIPOC artists, transgender & nonbinary artists, and disabled artists (note: we will try to help as many artists with need in Durham as we can)."
- Durham Arts Council Arts Recovery Fund
The DAC Arts Recovery Fund is working in partnership with the Durham Artist Relief Fund established by Northstar Church of the Arts. The two funds will support, cross-promote, and coordinate with each other to maximize resources available to the arts community. The Durham Arts Council Arts Recovery Fund is able to expand the emergency resources by attracting and administering dollars on behalf of public and private funders that are not able to channel their support through a GoFundMe platform. - Orange County Artists Relief Fund
"All donations received through this effort will be donated to the Orange County Arts Commission and will be dispersed through an application process to help those in our local arts community affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. 100% of your donation will be given to artists and nonprofit arts organizations who apply for assistance. Those applying will be asked to explain how they have been impacted and we will work to disperse funds as quickly as possible. The funds the arts commission was going to use for our canceled April event will serve as the seed funding for this effort." - Greensboro Emergency Artist Relief Fund
"This fund has been created to support creative individuals who have been financially impacted by event and performance cancellations due to the outbreak of COVID-19. 100% of donated funds will go directly to artists in Greensboro. Musicians, visual artists, actors, dancers, and other creative individuals are experiencing cancellations due to this global pandemic. Our local artists rely on markets, performances, commissions, classes, and exhibitions in order to pay the bills directly aligned with their costs of living.
The Greensboro Artist Emergency Relief Fund is managed by ArtsGreensboro (United Arts Council of Greater Greensboro). It is a stand-alone dedicated fund to support local artists and not a part of our community-wide ArtsFund campaign." - CAARE: Chatham Artists & Arts-Worker Relief Effort
Created with initial seed money generously granted by Manbites Dog Theater Fund, CAARE’s purpose is to get immediate assistance to Chatham County artists and arts-workers struggling with the economic impacts of the pandemic. We seek to help with basic financial needs for artists and arts-workers who are dealing with widespread cancellations of concerts, plays, events, and art shows–the outlets that musicians, actors, dancers, painters, sculptors, and teaching artists rely on to pay their bills.
Applications to the CAARE fund will be available to Chatham artists and arts-workers through this website on April 3 at 5 pm. Disbursements will begin April 9. - Mecklenberg Creatives Resiliency Fund
The Mecklenburg Creatives Resiliency Fund helps creative practitioners in Mecklenburg County recover from personal emergencies by helping pay an unanticipated, emergency expense or by augmenting lost income due to the cancellation of a specific, scheduled gig or opportunity (i.e. commissions, performances, contracts) due to Coronavirus/COVID-19 precautionary measures.
ASC will provide flat $500 awards to applicants meeting the fund criteria as long as funding is available. Only one request for support will be considered per Mecklenburg County applicant who demonstrates lost compensation or expenses at least equal to $500, incurred as a result of COVID-19 precautionary measures.
