It's going to be a great year for the NC Cello Society and all our events will be on Zoom!
Here are the dates and times for the following NCC Society events.
Jan. 10, 2021- Stephanie Vial - A Baroque cellist discusses practical approaches to the Bach Cello Suites. Member of the Vivaldi Project which presents seminars on historically informed performance, will discuss and recommend approaches to playing the Bach suites for solo cello. As they say, this is Stephanie's wheelhouse and this event will be illuminating for all of us.
March 7 - Tim Holley - Cello music by African American composers, Part 2
April 11 - Nancy Green - My remarkable teachers, what I learned from them (and didn't learn from them). Nancy will talk about her teachers, including Leonard Rose, Lynn Harrell, Jacqueline du Pre and Johannes Goritzki, focusing especially on the powerful lessons she learned from Goritzki. Nancy will also show the bow hold device (and how to make it) which she has used since studying with Goritzki.

Nov. 5, 2020 - A program featuring Jacqueline du Pre recording the Elgar Cello concerto with the London Symphony Orchestra.
For those of you who listen to the BBC, this month their IPlayer app has been change to the new BBC "Sounds" radio app. Today, checking out the new app, I came across this "Witness History" program, hearing Jackie's extraordinary playing together with the orchestra and conductor, Sir John Barbirolli. Even the most hard-boiled orchestra musicians were bowled over by this 20 year-old young woman. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/favourites/p00wq8cf

Here is a BBC video on playing the Elgar Cello Concerto - This should be on every cellist's list if they want to learn it.
From the video - We eavesdrop on rehearsals as the young cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra prepare for a performance at last year’s BBC Proms of Elgar’s Cello Concerto. The CBSO’s Music Director Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla and players from the orchestra give us their insiders' perspective on this celebrated music and show how they work together to make it come alive in the concert hall. Cellist Julian Lloyd Webber shares his experiences of playing this work hundreds of times throughout his career and discusses the challenges of rehearsing this piece with different orchestras around the world.

A year ago, our celebrity Board member Major Holley (AKA Dr. Tim Holley) was on the radio! He's on again in 2019, so if you want to listen to great jazz, this is the place!
Here is his note (the pun is intended!) about his upcoming stint on the radio.
Friends, Romans, "country folk", colleagues and err'body else!!
HELLO!! Please tune in to 90.7 FM, WNCU (WNCU.org) to celebrate Jazz Appreciation Month!! Major Holley is the featured artist of the month, and yours truly will be on the air from 11am-1pm playing an interesting blend of jazz that both influenced Major and helped influence the present generation of leading jazz musicians. Whether through Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Gerald Wilson and Quincy Jones or through Clark Terry, Coleman Hawkins, Jaki Byard and Rahsaan Roland Kirk, you'll find this musical journey to be anything but routine!! Even the swing feel has its own quality, and between Major and Clark Terry the meaning of "scat singing" has its own special category within vocal jazz!!
Thanks in advance for listening in, either on 90.7 FM radio or online!!
Dr. Tim Holley.
