Sunday, April 11, 2021. Cello Society event. https://us02web.zoom.us/j/85487086722
Brenda and Erica each gave a fascinating description of their new project beginning in 2020 -The Cello Museum. Stories, photos, unusual instruments were all around their homes for us to view and listen to experiences regarding the cello. Their website cellomuseum.org is an encyclopedia of many types of cellos and other instruments. A huge endeavor, beautifully presented.
Brenda Neece of Durham, NC is the founder of the Cello Museum, an online resource for everyone who loves the cello. Brenda founded the Cello Museum in 2020. She has a doctorate in Cello History from Oxford University. While living in England, Brenda also studied with William Pleeth for several years.
She writes: "Our mission is to present an interdisciplinary view of the cultural and technical history of the cello, as well as a perspective of its place in the world today in its many and widely varied contexts, to cellists and all who love the cello. The museum aims to foster connections among performers, teachers, researchers, composers, students, and audiences. Our vision is to inspire, educate, and entertain those who love and/or play the cello."
Brenda's talk will center around her amazing work as a dedicated cello historian and researcher, In addition, we'll hear from her collaborator, Erica Lessie of Chicago, who specializes in cellos of unusual shapes. They will give a virtual tour of the Cello Museum, its latest virtual exhibition in progress and show us some of the unique instruments they own.

2020 Oct. 3. The first Society event of the season with Sam Magill.
Here is the recording of his event. Available for 2 weeks from Oct. 3, 2020.
https://us02web.zoom.us/rec/share/9LikGHoJA31etWlEa_UQ5LiFtYNZFC7G6fZ8_Vll45qG5MwWQpJeCiPV1-rwpng.P1ArlFBAltM6jSaH Passcode: kc8D+i.B
“ Tales from the Metropolitan Opera cello section" with Sam Magill, veteran cellist, just retired and moved to Greensboro.
He is a graduate of the NC School of the Arts and Rice University, a former member of the Houston Symphony Orchestra before playing in the Pittsburgh Symphony, and winning the Metropolitan Opera orchestra job.
He gave stories from the pit, advice and strategies for professional auditions and answer questions. He says he is very much looking forward to becoming part of our amazing community of cellists.
It was a riveting insight into a life of cello playing in orchestras throughout the US ending up with 29 years with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra.
Here are a few of the questions that Sam Magill, a 27-year member of the Metropolitan Opera cello section answered -
a. What is the rehearsal and performance schedule like at the Met?
b. How do you (do you?) avoid playing injuries with such a heavy schedule of difficult music? How frequent were injuries among the orchestra members?
c. What were your healthcare coverage and benefits like at the Met?
d. What are your recommendations for cellists planning to audition for an orchestra - what is the process like, how to prepare, how to know if you're ready or not.
e. How important is it to have a great cello for an audition?
In addition - Among many of his interesting anecdotes on Saturday, Sam Magill told us about making the premiere recording of the cello concerto by Vernon Duke (born Vladimir Dukelsky, 1903-1969) in Moscow with the Russian Philharmonic. Phenomenal cello playing together with the orchestra. Here is a link to the 1st movement of Sam's recording.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwqtTdGa2Co&ab_channel=samuelmagill
Vernon Duke was the composer of "April in Paris" and other popular hits as well as this compelling concerto. It's easy to find the other movements on YouTube as well.

2019 -February 10. Presentation and Masterclass conducted by Brooks Whitehouse from the NC School of the Arts. Hosted by Tim Holley in the Edwards Music Building of NC Central University.
2017 - Feb. 26 From Debbie Davis.
First, thanks to all who participated in our Health and Wellness event for cellists of all ages yesterday at Meredith College! Dr. Tim Holley demonstrated his personal warming-up regimen. We all had a great time playing music together, (thanks are due to Emma Grube for leading the group and putting the music in the dropbox for downloading). Then we had some valuable conversations including cello-related injury accounts from Susan Gardner and Stephanie Vial (who broke her left elbow running on ice in Indiana before Christmas). We also had expert advice from Janet Lee, Acupuncturist and Dr. Mark Niemchak, chiropractor. FYI, Stephanie has healed beautifully and her left hand is getting closer to being fully functional all the time.
